He discussed ideas for building an open internet and the platforms that will help decentralize the web, providing users the ability to take control of their data. He detailed the strategies and steps companies can take to adapt to disruption.

In 1989, Tim was working as a software engineer at CERN, the particle physics laboratory in Switzerland, when he developed a global hypertext project that eventually became known as the World Wide Web. He is also the founder of the WWW Foundation, director of the WWW Consortium (W3C), a teacher at Boston’s MIT and the University of Southampton in England, and author of the book Weaving the Web, among other publications.

Cognitive technologies (aka artificial intelligence) offer the possibility of new and potentially disruptive opportunities to many businesses. A growing number of companies are already achieving significant benefits from using them, and are building ongoing capabilities to further develop and implement these technologies. In Tom Davenport’s presentation, he explained the constellation of cognitive technologies and describeed the most prominent enterprise use cases for each. He contrasts moon-shot projects with the low-hanging-fruit uses of AI that are much more likely to be successful. He discussed the strategies and steps companies can take to incorporate cognitive capabilities into their businesses.

The media sector is undergoing unprecedented change. Internet sites and mobile apps are diverting eyes (and advertising dollars) from traditional media outlets. Social media and web services are replacing newspapers and television as the primary source of news and current affairs.
