Deloitte’s 2013 BC Alumnus of the Year
At Deloitte we celebrate our successes and yours!
We would like to congratulate Peter D. Barnes, Chairman CB Gold Inc. and Director MAG SILVER as the 2013 BC Deloitte Alumnus of the Year.

Peter takes the gold medal for demonstrating an outstanding ability to lead with a clear vision, an unwavering determination to grow his organization and win in the marketplace, and has done so tirelessly with an optimistic outlook.
Peter was recognized at our annual BC alumni reception on November 28, 2013 at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

About Peter
Peter D. Barnes is the Chairman of CB Gold Inc. He is also a Director of MAG Silver Corp. and is a founding shareholder and Chairman of DeepGreen Resources Inc.

Peter held numerous roles during his time at Deloitte, including as the Director of the Vancouver audit practice at Deloitte Haskins and Sells from 1983 to 1990 and was a member of the Board of Directors.

A Chartered Accountant, with over 25 years of senior management experience is best known for building two of the world’s premier precious metals companies: Goldcorp and Silver Wheaton.

From 2003, until his appointment as CEO of Silver Wheaton in early 2006, Peter was the CFO of Wheaton River Minerals, and subsequently Goldcorp Inc., after the companies merged in 2005. During this time, Peter was part of a team responsible for one of the most exciting growth phases in the company’s history, when Wheaton River/Goldcorp’s market capitalization increased significantly and the company was transformed from a junior gold producer to one of the world’s leading low-cost emerging gold producers.

From 2006 until April 2011, Peter was CEO of Silver Wheaton, a company he co-founded in 2004. Under his leadership, Silver Wheaton, with its unique silver streaming model, provided shareholders with a 50% annualized rate of return and grew into one of the largest silver companies in the world.

Charity: First United Church and The Dugout
In keeping with Deloitte’s commitment to supporting the communities in which we live, a donation of $5000 has been made in Peter’s honour to the First United Church and The Dugout, two charities that focus on helping people in need in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver.

First United Church provides a wide range of programs and services from support groups, to personal care activities, to providing clothing and toiletries, to recreation, to meals and overnight beds in their shelters.

The Dugout is a drop-in center that serves as a neighborhood living room for the homeless and for those living in Single Room Occupancies. Volunteers provide assistance, emotional support and guidance to anyone in need. Each day hundreds of people receive a nourishing meal, a warm cup of coffee, and a compassionate offer to help them make life a little bit more comfortable.

Gaining ground in the sands 2014: Five rites of passage for an industry in pursuit of operational maturity

Gaining ground in the sands 2014: Five rites of passage for an industry in pursuit of operational maturity
It’s a critical time in the sands’ lifecycle. Struggling with market access and uncertain emission regulations, oil sands firms have yet to reach operational maturity. Companies face an exceptional opportunity to “come of age” through five rites of passage:

    1. Fitting in: Moving beyond “growth at all costs”
    2. Negotiating peer pressure: Competition for talent from natural gas
    3. Finding yourself: Innovation vs. imitation on the road to excellence
    4. Standing on your own feet: Improving reliability and asset management
    5. Leaving the nest: Access to capital and the revised Investment Canada Act

Winnipeg & Regina alumni receptions to be rescheduled to the spring
The highly anticipated annual Alumni Receptions in Winnipeg & Regina have been moved from the chill of autumn to the thaw of the spring. Alumni Receptions are wonderful events that brings together Deloitte alumni from across the province to meet, mingle, and re-connect.

Last year's Winnipeg alumni reception took place on October 3, 2012 at the Qualico Family Centre in Assiniboine Park. With over 100 guests in attendance, it was an exciting evening of networking and celebration.

Last year’s inaugural Regina alumni reception took place on November 27, 2012 at the Delta Hotel Regina. It was a well-attended, great evening of networking.

This year’s receptions will be held at the newly renovated Deloitte offices, in each city, which will give alumni a special insider’s look at the bright and modern redesign. Stay tuned for further details on this year’s reception to be provided in the coming months.

Ottawa

Ottawa: Business Class
Deloitte hosted over 500 guests at its inaugural Business Class event on December 6, 2013 in Ottawa. This full day of learning combined premiere events such as – Private Company Forum, Accounting Technical Update, and Government Performance Forum – into one of Ottawa’s best conferences. Over 500 participants from both the private and public sector participated in sessions designed to educate and inspire. The workshops drew on a multi-disciplinary skill set, from how to use analytics to solve business problems to the future of productivity. We were happy to see many of our alum out in full force too. If you missed it or would like to see pictures from the event, click here.

We’re moving!
Deloitte Ottawa is on the move! Although only a few floors up from the current location in the World Exchange Plaza (WEP), the offices are moving away from the traditional workplace and toward what is being touted as ‘the office of the future’.

Also known as ‘coffices’, Deloitte Ottawa’s new offices will be located on the 9th, 15th and 16th floors of the WEP, in a sleek, contemporary and futuristic open space that allows for greater creativity and collaboration between service lines and levels. A variety of multi-functional workspaces will be available for employees to work in, depending on the task at hand and work-style preference. Some offices will even have walking treadmills!

Stay tuned for pictures of our new space, when we move in April!

Kitchener Alumni Event
On Thursday, June 13, 2013, the Deloitte, Kitchener office was granted exclusive access to Waterloo’s Perimeter Institute of Theoretical Physics to host our most recent Alumni event. For those that aren’t familiar with the Perimeter Institute, it is a scientific research organization that works to advance the understanding of physical laws and develop new ideas about the very essence of space, time, matter, and information. Read more about the Perimeter Institute.

Throughout the evening, our guests were given the opportunity to reconnect with other alumni and current staff and as well, to have a guided tour of the innovative facility. One of the many interesting design features of the building layout is the creation of “half-stories” that link the different floors of the Institute. Rather than your typical stairwell, these half stories meet part way between the floors and contain a small collaborative work space, often equipped with large blackboards, with the hopes that you will literally bump into someone you may not normally see – and who knows from there? The possibilities of that collaboration are endless – a truly As One approach to innovation.

During the event, we had the opportunity to debut a video that was produced by Deloitte to showcase one of our Kitchener alumni, Dave Moylan. Dave left Deloitte a few years ago, shortly after becoming a CA, to own and operate his own kung fu school, the Waterloo Kung Fu Academy. Sifu Dave shares some of his thoughts on his time at Deloitte in the video. Watch the video.

“Alumni are such a valuable part of our Deloitte community,” says Dlane Gilpin, Local Partner Champion of the KW alumni program. “Lifelong relationships are built during our time together at Deloitte. Events like this one are one way we have to stay connected and maintain those relationships. To view all the images from this event, please find us on Flickr.

Keep your eye out for Alumni events happening in Southwestern Ontario in 2014. We hope to see you there!

Portrait of an alumnus: Annie Lapointe
Director, Investment and Corporate Banking, BMO Capital Markets
Montreal, QC

Tell us about yourself.
First and foremost, I’m passionate about my work. Currently I’m Director, Investment and Corporate Banking for BMO Capital Markets. My role is to advise large corporations on their M&A, asset sales and valuation projects. I also help my clients to raise capital through the issuance of shares, corporate bonds or corporate loans. It’s a very stimulating and demanding environment.

I’m also a happy mother of two little girls, a four-year-old and a one-year-old. Working and raising a young family at the same time is a wonderful challenge. When it’s possible, I work remotely and, once the children are in bed, I end my day. Having a job that requires long hours means I must be well organized. The secret is having a solid support system, both at home and at work, so that everyone is happy and their needs are being met.

What career path have you followed?
I began at Deloitte in 2001 as an accountant within the Audit team and worked there for three years before I left to seek other big challenges. I left Deloitte with twinge of sadness as I had become very attached to my colleagues and clients. I left for a job as an analyst at BMO Capital Markets and am still part of the same team 10 years later, although now I’m a Director.

What is your recipe for success?
Achieving your goals requires determination and being passionate about what you do. When you love your work, the time passes quickly, and sacrifices are easier to make. The philosophy in my family is: “Love what you do and you’ll succeed.”

Alumni in the news
Meet Nicolas Blais, an outstanding CPA and Deloitte alumnus, by listening to one of the great CPA interviews with Pénélope McQuade.

In this offbeat and inspiring video interview, Nicolas dubs Deloitte as the “NHL of accounting.” Today, as the vice-president of finance at Québécomm, he speaks very positively about his experience at the firm, his transfer to Montreal and all the opportunities he was able to seize while working in our offices. You might be surprised to learn that art and accounting are compatible and that Deloitte contributed to Nicolas’ success.

As we start a new year, this interview is a real source of motivation to do what it takes to reach your goals, no matter what they are! Please note that this video is available in French language only.

The future of Quebec’s manufacturing industry
Working together for a better future

After the success of the roadshow entitled “The future of manufacturing in Quebec: Working together for a prosperous future,” Deloitte and its partners hit the road in Quebec between June 4 and November 27, 2013 to present their follow-up study.

As part of the second edition of the manufacturing roadshow, Deloitte is recognizing the sector’s greater-than-expected resilience and taking a fresh, optimistic look at today’s opportunities: What is the scope of the reindustrialization movement in North America? How can Quebec benefit? How can Quebec’s new industrial policy be a game-changer?

It is now time for Quebec’s manufacturing industry to mobilize and work together to ensure its sustainability and competitiveness. Because, after all, we are all affected, directly or indirectly, by the state of the province’s manufacturing industry.

We are all manufacturers.

Since the launch in 2011, more than 3,500 thought leaders have attended one of Deloitte’s manufacturing roadshow events.

Did you miss the roadshow when it came to your area? No worries, a few dates will be added in Spring 2014. Visit our webpage to learn more.

St. John’s office recognized by the Board of Trade
St. John’s office was recognized at the 19th Annual St. John’s Board of Trade Business Excellence Awards for their outstanding contributions to the community, winning in the Community Impact (20+ employees) category. Their nomination highlights that approximately 50% of the staff volunteer their time to over 70 non-profit organizations in Newfoundland and Labrador, each donating an average of 50 annual volunteer hours for each organization that they are involved with.

When you look at everything the St. John’s office does in the run of a year it certainly adds up - especially in volunteer time. It is estimated that the local firm gave more than 3,000 volunteer hours and well over $50,000 in both personal and corporate donations in 2013. For a small office, this is certainly an impressive number and shows that we go above and beyond to make our community a better place to live.
